High Oil Prices Spur Thoughts About Bubbles,

Share/Bookmark
Follow the link for complete text of this article.

Don't bubbles usually occur after several years of people crying "wolf"? When they burst you usually see a massive short capitulation and then hear those famous words, when it gets back to (name a price well above the market) I'm getting out.

A bubble, says The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, "refers to asset prices that exceed an asset's fundamental value because current owners believe they can resell the asset at an even higher price."

But figuring out whether a commodity exceeds its fundamental value is difficult: Because there is no income stream, there is no equivalent to the price-to-earnings ratios that people use to value stocks.

11 Billion Reasons to Buy These Stocks

It has to be the most sobering statistic related to the spike in gasoline prices. The Department of Transportation reported this morning that Americans covered 4.3% fewer miles -- which equals 11 billion -- on the country's roads in March than they did a year earlier.
Netflix
(Nasdaq: NFLX): The movie rental giant is an obvious winner. It has 8.2 million subscribers enjoying DVD rentals without having to step out much beyond their front porch.
Amazon.com (
(Nasdaq: AMZN): If heading out to the strip mall for a movie is a challenge, it's going to be even harder to work up the nerve to hit the local shopping mall.

Crude math: $10 equates to $610 million

Share/Bookmark
Investors might want to take note. I wonder how much the Federal government is paying in higher fuel costs across the board?

Imagine the cost for state and local governments just to cover the rising fuel prices for school buses.

I really don't think much thought is going into all the higher cost issues for school systems across the country. We should be reading about budget crunches all across the country soon.

Five Easy Ways to Green Your Next Remodel

Share/Bookmark
A recent study of real-estate listings in Seattle found certified green homes sold for an 11% premium per square foot and sat on the market a quarter less time. Granted, it’s one city and one that’s particularly eco-oriented. But as much as 20% of all new construction is expected to be green by 2012. Existing homes must keep up, particularly as resale value of home improvements in general slides.

This weekend I chronicled my journey to an entirely eco-kitchen.
Most major brands of paint and home improvement stores now sell paint with low no volatile organic compounds (gaseous pollutants). It costs a few more dollars, but you don’t get headaches
Any time a wall is down, add layers. It’ll cut back energy bills and make room temperature more comfortable year-round. Here are four types of insulation considered particularly “green.”
Appliances: When you replace, look for the Energy Star label.

Cabinets:
In addition to smaller eco-lines like Neil Kelly and Breathe Easy there are at least 107 mainstream kitchen cabinet makers who incorporate a good number of health and eco features. Here’s a list.
Light-emitting diodes; compact fluorescents; halogens. Put what you can on dimmers. Read more about the technology here.

Solarfun Power Short Interest Balloons, Squeeze In Play

Share/Bookmark
It was a wild day on Wall Street as Solar stocks soared along with the price of crude oil.
clipped from www.antandsons.com
On the technical breakout scene this afternoon was Solarfun Power Holdings Co. (SOLF) which rose $1.25, or 8.37%, to $16.19 on volume of 9.1 million shares, more than double the three month average daily volume of 4.37 million shares.
Today’s move coincides with an across the board “green day” in solar power stocks led by First Solar, which rose 6.72% to $303.98
The bullish move could be attributed to a round of intense short covering
Since the end of January there were about 11.3 million shares short, but that has moved up to 15.2 million as of the last reported settlement date of April 30
The shares represent a substantial portion of the 48.3 million shares outstanding and the publicly traded float of 43.5 million shares
It’s an understatement to say that the short supply of shares has added to the volatility of this solar name and fueled the momentum trade.

Canadian Solar Takes Off

The Santa Ana, Calif.-based company attributed its strong quarter to demand for its conversion kits and systems that allow internal combustion engines to operate on gaseous fuels such as propane and natural gas.

Canadian Solar's fourth quarter impressed investors, but its first quarter really sent them to the moon. Not only did the Chinese solar cell maker double Wall Street's earnings expectations, it issued a strong second-quarter outlook.
For the quarter that ended March 31, the company, which is incorporated in Canada, posted earnings of $19.0 million, or 61 cents per share, turning around from a loss of $3.9 million, or 14 cents per share, in last year's corresponding quarter.

Tensions Rise as Polar Bear Decision Looms

Share/Bookmark
Dr. Amstrup is concerned anew by what he’s seeing, he said in an Alaska Public Radio interview a few days ago and in an email exchange Friday evening. In the radio segment, he said the coastal survey so far had turned up only one yearling among 57 bears found between Barrow and Kaktovik, 300 miles east. For several years, he said, females have been found with cubs, but the lack of year-old bears implies a high mortality rate for the young. “The cubs appear to be dying at a higher rate than we’re used to,” he told the radio station.

Steven C. Amstrup, the federal biologist who led an analysis last year concluding that the world’s polar bear population could shrink two thirds by 2050 under moderate projections for retreating summer sea ice, is once again in the field along Alaska’s Arctic coast, studying this year’s brood of cubs, yearlings and mothers.

Over 80 Trillion Btus of Natural Gas Savings Found
clipped from www.energy.gov
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that it has completed the 500th Energy Saving Assessment (ESA) at the nation’s largest industrial facilities.  These assessments have helped companies identify opportunities to save over an estimated 80 trillion British Thermal Units of natural gas – roughly equivalent to the natural gas used in over one million American homes –  more than $800 million in potential energy savings.  If all of the recommendations from the assessments conducted are fully implemented by the industrial facilities, the Department estimates that 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be saved annually.

    Betting on Warming or Cooling

    Share/Bookmark
    Which way would you bet?
The scientists who maintain the Realclimate.org blog have offered a climate wager to the research team from Germany that recently predicted a short pause in global warming (along with some North American and European cooling).
    Vegas

Here’s how the Realclimate bloggers set up the bet:

The bet we propose is very simple and concerns the specific global prediction in their Nature article. If the average temperature 2000-2010 (their first forecast) really turns out to be lower or equal to the average temperature 1994-2004 (*), we will pay them € 2500. If it turns out to be warmer, they pay us € 2500.
    What would you bet?
Andrew C. Revkin on Climate Change
By 2050 or so, the world population is expected to reach nine billion, essentially adding two Chinas to the number of people alive today.
