Not only did the Chinese solar cell maker double Wall Street's earnings expectations, it issued a strong second-quarter outlook. For the quarter that ended March 31, the company, which is incorporated in Canada, posted earnings of $19.0 million, or 61 cents per share, turning around from a loss of $3.9 million, or 14 cents per share, in last year's corresponding quarter.

Tensions Rise as Polar Bear Decision Looms

Dr. Amstrup is concerned anew by what he’s seeing, he said in an Alaska Public Radio interview a few days ago and in an email exchange Friday evening. In the radio segment, he said the coastal survey so far had turned up only one yearling among 57 bears found between Barrow and Kaktovik, 300 miles east. For several years, he said, females have been found with cubs, but the lack of year-old bears implies a high mortality rate for the young. “The cubs appear to be dying at a higher rate than we’re used to,” he told the radio station.

Over 80 Trillion Btus of Natural Gas Savings Found

clipped from www.energy.gov The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that it has completed the 500th Energy Saving Assessment (ESA) at the nation’s largest industrial facilities.  These assessments have helped companies identify opportunities to save over an estimated 80 trillion British Thermal Units of natural gas – roughly equivalent to the natural gas used in over one million American homes –  more than $800 million in potential energy savings.  If all of the recommendations from the assessments conducted are fully implemented by the industrial facilities, the Department estimates that 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be saved annually.

Here’s how the Realclimate bloggers set up the bet: The bet we propose is very simple and concerns the specific global prediction in their Nature article. If the average temperature 2000-2010 (their first forecast) really turns out to be lower or equal to the average temperature 1994-2004 (*), we will pay them € 2500. If it turns out to be warmer, they pay us € 2500. What would you bet? By 2050 or so, the world population is expected to reach nine billion, essentially adding two Chinas to the number of people alive today.
